When it comes to the pop/rock music scene, there's always been something about the Fairfax, Virginia rockers The Bigger Lights that has stood out to me. Although - the pop/rock scene has quickly been 'overpopulated' - there is something within the slightly higher-pitched unique vocals behind lead singer, Topher Talley - as well as, the always fun, truly "popping" guitar rifts and snare drums rifts. Being so, The Bigger Lights - did not fail at all, when it came to putting out one amazing self-titled album. To kick things off with the album, the lively track "That Kind Of Girl" began. Only being a little over 2 minutes and 30 seconds, the track still provided that 'enjoyable', 'lively' sound - to kick off the album in a right The Bigger Lights fashion. For those who have never listened to The Bigger Lights - what you can fully expect from, is a feel-good vibe, with danceable rifts and drum beats. What you can also expect from them is a large variety in sound. Even when they keep true to their pop/rock sound, they never fail when it comes to making every track not sound the same on an album - where as many artists these days have trouble with that factor. As much as the band includes up-beat, energetic songs - such as "What About Us", "Hey Summer", and "Somewhere Out There" - the band doesn't fail when it comes to succeeding in 'breaking it down' acoustically. In general, compared to other bands currently - "The Bigger Lights" aren't a surprise when it comes to most tracks on the album, being love songs.

Only with a light drum beat, a mostly-piano based tune (until the guitar comes in towards the end) - "Skinny Jeans" has to be one of my favorite tracks on the album. It speaks of being without you're one true love, and how you can't possibly or won't go on without them. With lyrics such as "So if you're mine, you better to mine |Until our lungs run out of time | And I don't wanna feel this heart | Beat without you." exemplifies how The Bigger Lights make their mainly female fans' hearts' swoon. Picking up the pace once again, the band finishes up the album with an exceptional track, titled "So Crazy" in which the man, has lost his way on the journey of life. He can't see himself and is unsure of who he's become, which can be seen based on lyrics such as; "I know I'm the only one to blame| For all of my self-inflicted pain| But when I'm alone at night| I crush my maker's day." Not only does this provide some beautiful work done by The Bigger Lights - but this allows the band as a whole, to connect with their fans on an even more personal way, compared to their more up-beat, energetic songs.
With a solid debut album - expect the persevering, eye-popping, "The Bigger Lights" to stick around in the music industry for quite a while. From what is displayed from this debut album, one can truly hear not only the enjoyment these guys get out of doing what they love - but also, the passion they all put into their music. Every song is different, in a good way - and most songs provide positive, up-beat energy - making overall just a fun album. The Bigger Lights display the absolute potential they have to be one of the bigger names in the industry, within their self-titled debut album. From this day forth, you can take my word on the fact - that they're not going anywhere, for a while.

Vocalist Adam Lazzara, guitarist Eddie Reyes and drummer Mark O’Connell have reunited with vocalist/guitarist John Nolan and bass player Shaun Cooper, who departed in 2003 after the release of Tell All Your Friends. "This crazy idea came up and once we started exploring it and talking on the phone it was almost like all that time hadn't passed between us," explains Lazzara. "Given the history and the years that had passed, I don't think any of us really knew if hanging out again let alone writing and playing together would actually work. For it to feel so comfortable and effortless so quickly made us realize that we had to give it a chance."
Nolan describes his thoughts in a similar way. "I never would have imagined that this group of people reuniting would be possible. Since we parted ways we all went down very different paths and somehow everything we've experienced individually over the past seven years has brought us back to a point of genuine appreciation and love for each other as people and musicians. There's a shared excitement and enthusiasm within this group that I haven't experienced since the early days of the band."
Of the departure of bassist Matt Rubano and guitarist/vocalist Matt Fazzi, a statement from Taking Back Sunday’s website sums it up; “Sometimes it takes some time to remember where you were headed in the first place and the people you intended to go there with. There are no hard feelings, just the future.” Drummer O’Connell expressed that the band has nothing but kind words for the departing members. “I wish nothing but the best for Matt and Matt in the future. I know that they will succeed in whatever they choose to do.”
Taking Back Sunday will be recording their fifth studio album in Los Angeles this summer with producer Eric Valentine, who worked on their previous album Louder Now. Plans are in the works for a handful of exclusive preview shows in the near future and extensive touring as soon as the album is finished. “I’m so glad this is happening,” says Reyes, “because I can already hear something in the songs that reminds me of why all of us were so passionate about this band to begin with.”
Just the future indeed.
