Sexy, mature, and Justin Timberlake-eque? You wouldn’t believe that we’re referencing all the key elements of Justin Bieber’s newest single, “Boyfriend”. As a matter of fact, no three words could describe the song even better. Bieber’s stepping out of his comfort zone and immersing himself in an area of growth, confidence, and freshness.
If you were expecting your stereotypical bubblegum pop hit from Justin Bieber’s newest single, “Boyfriend”, then you’re sadly mistaken. Though, the single hasn’t generated the greatest reception from Bieber’s fans, it’s a single that reflects the growth and maturity in Bieber’s voice, despite the adolescent lyrical content.
Channeling his inner Justin Timberlake, Bieber begins to embark on the journey from young pop-star to credible artist. The lyrics appear comical from time to time (as he makes several references to ‘swag’ and ‘swaggie’ at times), but the track is definitely a step up from the annoyingly repetitive “Baby”. Regardless of the lyrical content, Bieber proves that he’s beginning to pave his way as a real artist and musician, along with ensuring his longevity in the music industry. We can all agree that the lyrical content isn’t its best, but to deny that Bieber’s growing into a mature artist would be a mistake.
Before chiming in with his surprisingly ‘sexy’ vocals, Bieber spits to open up the track. All of the verses continue to be rapped throughout the song. The slick instrumentation backing Bieber isn’t anything too overpowering, but instead allows for Bieber to display his vocal maturity and growth. Dare I say any girl will be won over by the contagious chorus? Prepare to have this chorus embedded in your brain for days to come. ‘Beliebers’ and even skeptics will appreciate the maturity Bieber has undergone, despite any criticism he may receive for the lack-of-original lyrical content.
Bieber isn’t the same youngster who sprung into the music world a handful of years ago through his Youtube success. His fans have grown, he’s grown, and likewise has his music. “Boyfriend” successfully guides Bieber in the right direction, as far as undergoing the transition from adorable popstar to mature R&B artist. He isn’t grown up yet, but he’s well on his way.
Mike Posner, Mat Musto, and Mason Levy co-wrote the song with Bieber. This is the first single off his upcoming album, “Believe” which is due out later this summer. Purchase your own copy of “Boyfriend” on Itunes today, as it has already charted at the #1 spot.
